South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has secured contracts to build two LNG carriers for its affiliated company, Hanwha Shipping.
The shipyard, previously known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and based in Okpo, is set to complete and deliver the vessels by September 2027.
Hanwha Shipping was officially established in April 2024 as Hanwha Ocean’s shipowning division, aimed at serving as a platform for testing and validating new ship technologies.
At the Gastech event in Houston last September, Hanwha Ocean introduced its next-generation vessels, including a groundbreaking zero-emission LNG carrier design called Ocean 1.
This innovative vessel is designed to incorporate an ammonia gas turbine-based electric propulsion system, along with advanced digital and eco-friendly solutions.
While specific details about the two new LNG carriers—each valued at approximately $252 million—have yet to be disclosed, the project underscores Hanwha Ocean’s commitment to advancing sustainable and high-tech maritime solutions.
