Fire Breaks Out on Cargo Ship EFES in Bay of Bengal

A prominent marine and transport claim company has reported a fire aboard the general cargo ship Efes. The incident occurred on August 19, approximately 540 nautical miles east of Chennai, in the Bay of Bengal, India.

In response, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Chennai issued a call for assistance to nearby vessels to help the stricken cargo ship. At this time, the cause and specifics of the fire remain unclear.

The Efes is registered under the Panamanian flag and, according to Marine Traffic data, was partially loaded and had departed from Visakhapatnam, India, on August 17, heading towards Port Klang, Malaysia.

Built in 1999, the vessel is currently out of communication range.
