Canadian supply chains are facing severe disruption as ports on both coasts remain shut down due to labor conflicts.

Dockworkers have been locked out of Montreal, the largest port on Canada’s east coast, amid a prolonged labor dispute with no resolution in sight. Meanwhile, ports in British Columbia on the west coast have been closed for seven days due to a separate labor issue.

The Montreal Port Authority has urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to intervene and resolve the standoff. “I believe that the best agreements are negotiated at the table. But let’s face it, there are no negotiations,” said Julie Gascon, CEO of the Montreal Port Authority, last Thursday.

Canada’s labor minister, Steven MacKinnon, stated last Thursday that while the government supports the negotiation process, talks at both the British Columbia and Montreal ports are “progressing at an insufficient pace, indicating a concerning absence of urgency from the parties involved.”
