According to the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), the port of Savannah handled 530,800 TEU in July, a rise of 18% over the same period in 2021. GPA has witnessed 3.4 million TEU since January, which equates to an increase of 231,400 TEU or 7% when compared to the same time in 2021 numbers.

GPA has changed the start time of operations by two hours. Drivers have embraced the extended hours strongly since they began on August 1; 3,000 transactions have been done within those extra hours.

Four of the eight new ship-to-shore cranes that GPA has ordered will arrive in February 2023, and the remaining four will do so by the year's end. Furthermore, work on a second big ship berth at the Garden City Terminal is 60% finished, and July 2023 is the projected start date for completion. The Garden City Terminal West project will gradually increase the container yard capacity by 1 million TEU between 2023 and 2024, while the enhanced berth will increase berth capacity by 1.4 million TEU.

By next year, GPA will boost its annual berth capacity from 6 million to 7.5 million TEU, and by 2025, it will reach 9 million TEU. To do this, GPA plans to invest US$4.5 billion over the following 12 years.

“The Port of Savannah has clearly become a preferred East Coast gateway for shippers globally, including cargo diverted from the US West Coast,” said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch. “Our expedited infrastructure projects, extended gate hours and the outstanding work of our employees and partners are key to our ability to move cargo at a record pace.”
