Somali Pirates Resurface, Threatening Merchant Vessels

Shipping companies have been alerted to the resurgence of Somali pirates, who are once again actively seeking targets.
British maritime security firm Ambrey has issued a notice to clients, warning of a suspected pirate action group seen departing from Marreya, Eyl, located in northeastern Somalia.
Merchant vessels are advised to enhance vigilance and, where feasible, employ armed security if the ship has an appropriate freeboard.
Yesterday, the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation ATALANTA reported that pirates hijacked a Yemeni-flagged dhow on Sunday. The vessel is now likely being used as a mother ship, enabling pirates to launch attacks on merchant vessels.
Somali piracy was widespread between 2008 and 2012 but then largely disappeared for several years. However, since March last year, pirate activity has resurged, with multiple vessel hijackings and crew abductions making headlines once again.
