Davie Awarded First Government Contract for Six Icebreakers
Today, Chantier Davie Canada Inc. (Davie) has announced that it has secured its inaugural contract under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) from the Government of Canada. This contract entails the design work for a new six-ship icebreaker fleet, part of Canada's future Program Icebreakers, signifying Davie's entry into the NSS initiative aimed at revitalizing Canada's Arctic naval capabilities.
Each step of this contract will propel forward the phases of design, construction, delivery, and support for these critical maritime assets.
Davie is set to create a specialized project management and design office for the Program Icebreaker, offering significant opportunities for both current and aspiring Canadian shipbuilders.
The company is dedicated to assembling a team of top-tier shipbuilding experts to oversee the largest global order of heavy icebreakers, from conception to construction.
In addition, Davie will collaborate with essential subcontractors to ensure the icebreakers meet the highest standards of safety, environmental sustainability, and performance.
Leveraging its history of delivering superior quality vessels, Davie emphasizes that this initial stage is crucial for ensuring the ships' long-term operational efficiency and readiness, thereby enhancing the Canadian Coast Guard's mission capabilities.
In a statement, Davie President and CEO, James Davies, said: “This is a momentous first step in our journey to deliver a fleet of the largest and most advanced icebreakers ever built in and for Canada. My heartfelt thanks go to the dedicated teams at Davie, the Canadian Coast Guard and PSPC. They have spent countless hours preparing for this historic milestone. Now, we can’t wait to get working on renewing Canada’s Arctic fleet.”
