The union representing longshore workers at the Port of Montreal has issued a 24-hour strike notice, set to begin at 7 a.m. this Sunday, marking the latest round of industrial action affecting the North American east coast.

This follows a three-day strike held by the union in September, as well as ongoing action where workers are refusing to work overtime. Longshore workers at the Canadian port have been without a collective agreement since December 31 of last year.

Earlier this month, a separate three-day strike also impacted ports across the U.S. east and Gulf coasts. In response, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have since resumed negotiations to address unresolved issues, with their current contract extended until January 15.

Port strikes have become a frequent topic in recent years as the cost of living crisis continues to affect workers globally. In Australia, industrial action began at the ports of Brisbane and Darwin today, with a seven-day strike that started just after midnight.
