COSCO Shipping has announced plans for routine visits to the Port of La Spezia with its 20,000 TEU ships, signaling the COSCO Shipping Aries as the inaugural large-scale container vessel from the Chinese company to dock at the Italian port.

Starting this March, COSCO's 20,000 TEU ships are set to become a regular feature at the Port of La Spezia, indicating the introduction of four of these massive vessels into their Asia Mediterranean Service (AEM1) lineup.

These vessels, each stretching close to 400 meters in length, signify a shift towards accommodating the changing demands and standards in maritime transportation, including the challenges of navigating longer routes around Africa.

This adjustment will also see the creation of two new separate circuits within the Mediterranean, aimed at supporting the use of higher capacity container ships.

Matteo Ferrando, key account manager at Contship Italia, expressed enthusiasm for the new addition: "We are proud and ready to welcome the COSCO SHIPPING Aries, the first in a series of ultra-large container vessels deployed in the AEM1 (MED1) service operated by the Chinese carrier within the Ocean Alliance. Our terminal has already demonstrated its ability to handle operationally this type of container ship, thus reaffirming our commitment to meeting every need and delivering the service excellence that our customers expect."
