The port of Manzanillo in Mexico is set for a significant $3.15 billion expansion, projected to be completed by 2030. This development will transform it into the largest port in Latin America, nearly tripling its container handling capacity to 10 million TEU.

President Claudia Sheinbaum is scheduled to visit the site on Saturday to officially kick off the construction phase of the project.

This move comes amid a surge in container traffic from Asia to Mexico. According to data from the US Commerce Department, Mexico surpassed China last year to become the United States' top trade partner.

Peter Sand, head of research at Xeneta, commented earlier this year on the potential implications of this growth: “In a purely hypothetical scenario, if this growth rate continues, by the year 2031 there will be more containers imported from China into Mexico than the US west coast.”
