Philippines Approves 1.65GW in Offshore Wind Projects
The Department of Energy of the Philippines has granted certificates of confirmation of commerciality to three offshore wind projects, with a combined capacity target of 1.65GW.
The projects are being developed by a consortium consisting of Triconti Windkraft Group, Sea Wind Holdings, and Stream Invest Holding. This group plans to enter these projects into the Philippines' first offshore wind auction, set for next year.
The approved projects include the 450MW Frontera Bay Wind Power Project and the 1.2GW Guimaras Strait Project I and II, which will be developed in two phases of 600MW each.
Utilizing fixed-bottom foundations, these projects are the first in the country to complete the pre-development phase and receive confirmation of commerciality. The offshore wind energy service contracts for these projects were initially awarded in 2020 and 2021.
The consortium will now progress from feasibility assessments to detailed planning, construction, and production phases as part of the 20-year operational period of their service contracts.
The Philippines has an established plan to generate 15.3GW of clean energy by 2030, with 3 to 6GW expected to come from offshore wind sources.
