Port of San Diego Wins Award for Urban Sustainability Effort

On March 13, 2025, the Port of San Diego received the Grow Urban Sustainability Award at the Downtown San Diego Partnership’s Create the Future Awards ceremony.
The award recognizes the Port's leadership in environmental stewardship and sustainable development, particularly its efforts to promote green initiatives and expand public green spaces in the downtown area. The honor was presented to Port Chair Danielle Moore, the Board of Port Commissioners, and port staff.
The Create the Future Awards celebrate the contributions of individuals, organizations, and projects that positively impact San Diego’s growth and development.
In addition to the main award, the Port was also acknowledged by both the City and County of San Diego for its continued commitment to environmental responsibility.
“The Port of San Diego is proud to receive the Grow Urban Sustainability Award for our dedication to sustainability and to supporting the environmental health of our urban waterfront along San Diego Bay,” said Chair Danielle Moore, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners.
“Since our first annual Green Port Month in 2008, the Port has made incredible investments in enhancing green spaces and improving air and water quality through programs such as our Maritime Clean Air Strategy, our Blue Economy Incubator, and our efforts to reduce stormwater pollution and protect the bay’s marine life and ecosystems.”
The Port was recognized for several key sustainability initiatives, including the Maritime Clean Air Strategy, which has successfully completed two-thirds of its action items since 2021. These efforts have contributed to improved air quality in both downtown San Diego and surrounding tidelands.
Another standout initiative is the Blue Economy Incubator, which fosters innovation in sustainable aquaculture and marine technologies aimed at reducing the maritime industry’s carbon footprint.
The Port is also actively involved in bay-wide environmental restoration and pollution prevention efforts. Its ongoing commitment has earned it a place in the top 10% of ports participating in the Green Marine environmental certification program across North America.
