Ferry Grounds at Las Palmas Dock After Collision with Pier
On December 18, the ferry Ciudad de Ibiza, which operates routes to the Balearic Islands, became stranded at the Cristóbal Colón dock in the Port of Las Palmas, Spain. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The grounding occurred after the ferry collided with the dock, causing substantial damage to both the vessel and the port's infrastructure.
The incident was triggered by a sudden gust of wind that caused the ferry to deviate from its course during a docking maneuver, leading it to crash into the breakwater near the La Esfinge dock. At the time, the ferry had no passengers or cargo on board, only crew members.
Salvamento Marítimo dispatched the rescue tug Heroínas de Sálvora to assist. While the initial plan was to wait for high tide to refloat the vessel, two tugboats successfully pulled it free and relocated it to a docking area for inspection.
Upon examination, a two-meter crack was discovered on the starboard side of the vessel. Additionally, the ship's captain reported a leak in the staircase leading to the engine room, which occurred upon impact.
An investigation is now underway. Experts are analyzing the ship’s black box, and divers are inspecting the hull to identify any further structural damage.
