Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) have signed a partnership agreement to jointly advance the development and supply of alternative marine fuels.

Together, ONE and SIPG will explore and create alternative marine fuels for ONE's container ships operating in Shanghai port. According to ONE, this initiative not only promotes the energy transformation and sustainable growth of the shipping industry but also demonstrates both parties' commitment to addressing global decarbonization challenges.

ONE aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In January, ONE placed orders for twelve 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships from Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, with deliveries starting in 2027. In July, ONE reportedly returned to these shipyards to order an additional ten vessels.

SIPG is proactively working on delivering cleaner marine fuels. The company is building the Shanghai Port Green Energy Centre and collaborating with global partners to research and develop a comprehensive supply chain from fuel production to refueling.

In January, SIPG signed an agreement with Taiwanese operator Evergreen Marine Corporation to supply methanol bunkers for its ships. In 2023, Evergreen Marine commissioned two dozen methanol dual-fuel vessels.

In April, Shanghai Port conducted China’s first green methanol ship-to-ship bunkering operation, and in May, it completed its 100th delivery of bonded LNG bunkers.
