In a significant incident early this morning, Australia’s largest sail-training tall ship sustained severe damage after being hit by the Maersk Shekou, a container vessel with a capacity of 8,814 TEU.
The collision occurred as the boxship was navigating into the inner harbor of Fremantle port, where it also collided with the Western Australian Maritime Museum.
The STS Leeuwin II, a tall ship constructed in 1986, suffered the loss of its masts in the accident, and two crew members were injured. Fortunately, the 55-meter sailing vessel's hull remains intact.
Authorities have announced that an investigation into the cause of the accident will commence soon.
