Although women represent just 2% of the global seafaring workforce, a groundbreaking initiative is set to change that. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) is launching the Women at Sea network—a dedicated platform designed to empower, support, and connect women in the maritime sector.

The network will be officially unveiled during a webinar on March 7, 2025, at 12:00 GMT, moderated by ITF Maritime Coordinator Jacqueline Smith. The session will feature speakers from the Norwegian Seafarers’ Union, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and industry experts, who will explore both the challenges and opportunities for women at sea.

Having gone live earlier this year, the Women at Sea network serves as a specialized hub offering resources for those already working in or considering a maritime career. Developed by ITF affiliates, the initiative focuses on:

  • Increasing female representation in the maritime field
  • Supporting career advancement for women already at sea
  • Strengthening communication among seafarers, unions, and the ITF
  • Enhancing the visibility of women in maritime roles
  • Promoting workplace safety by addressing issues like discrimination, sexual harassment, and bullying

In addition to career development resources, the platform also provides well-being support, including networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and mental health assistance.

The maritime industry has long been male-dominated, but with initiatives such as Women at Sea, the ITF aims to dismantle barriers and create a more inclusive future. By addressing systemic challenges and advocating for policy reforms, the federation hopes to make the seas a safer and more welcoming environment for women.
