MSC Joins CMA CGM in New Moroccan Container Terminal Project

Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has partnered with rival CMA CGM to invest in a new terminal at one of Africa’s fastest-growing container hubs, Morocco.
Marsa Maroc Port has finalized an agreement with MSC’s Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), granting the Swiss shipping giant a 50% minority stake, minus one share, in a terminal at Nador West Med.
CMA CGM previously secured the other half of the project last October. Once fully operational, the terminal—located in Morocco’s far northeast—will boast a handling capacity of 1.2 million TEUs.
“With four container terminals now in operation at the almost fully built-out Tanger Med port, today the largest container terminal in the Med, Morocco is trying to replicate Tanger’s success story with Nador West Med port as a second West Med hub some 250 km east,” noted analysts at Alphaliner.
Plans are also in place for the port to host an additional, smaller container terminal in the future.
