MSC Containership Loses 46 Containers Amid Rough Weather
The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has confirmed that 46 containers were lost overboard from the containership MSC Antonia due to severe weather. The incident took place on August 28, about 29 nautical miles northeast of Port St Johns, South Africa.
At the time of the accident, the vessel was transporting roughly 305 containers and also suffered some structural damage. The Antonia was on a scheduled route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to New York, USA.
SAMSA indicated that once the ship arrives in Cape Town, it will undergo a detailed inspection and receive necessary repairs before continuing its journey.
According to Marine Traffic data, the containership, which sails under the Liberian flag, departed from Colombo on August 15 and is currently in Cape Town, South Africa.
In a separate incident, the CMA CGM Belem lost 99 containers off the coast near Richard Bay on August 16, also due to harsh weather. SAMSA noted that 20 containers were seen during an aerial search last Friday, but they were unable to verify whether those containers were from the ship.
