Bulk Carrier & Fishing Vessel Collide Near Con Dao, Vietnam
On September 19, the 169-meter bulk carrier Transformer Ol collided with the fishing vessel BV99778TS about 22 nautical miles southeast of Con Dao, Vietnam. The impact caused the fishing vessel to capsize and partially sink, resulting in the rescue of 12 out of the 14 crew members aboard the fishing boat.
The incident occurred while the Transformer Ol was en route from Chittagong, Bangladesh, to Vung Tau, Vietnam. The collision sent all 14 crew members of the fishing vessel into the sea, where nearby fishing boats quickly responded and managed to save 12 of them.
One of the survivors sustained severe injuries and was transported to Con Dao for medical treatment.
The Vietnamese Coast Guard was alerted and initiated a search and rescue operation, despite facing challenging weather conditions, including 7-meter waves and strong winds.
After two days of searching, on September 21, the body of one missing crew member was found and brought ashore for identification by authorities. The search for the final missing sailor continues.
