A fire broke out on a mobile crane at the Infraestructura Portuaria Mexicana (IPM) terminal, leading to the crane collapsing onto the bulk carrier St. Ajisai. The  incident took place in Altamira, Mexico, on Wednesday, March 27th.

During the operation to unload cargo from a vessel with a large draught, the Liebherr-branded crane caught fire. The St. Ajisai, a Panamanian-flagged ship, measures 200 meters in length and 32 meters in width, and was constructed in 2022.

Volunteer firefighters from Tamaulipas A.C., who were called to the scene, speculated that the blaze might have been ignited by an oil leak in the crane’s engine.

Both the IPM and the Administration of the National Harbour System (Asipona) Altamira have yet to release any statements concerning the accident involving the crane.
