Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd is moving forward with additional dual-fuel containership orders. The Hamburg-based global shipping company has returned to South Korea to commission six 16,800 TEU vessels, according to multiple shipbuilding sources.

Hanwha Ocean, formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), has been selected to construct the LNG dual-fuel containerships at an estimated cost of $200 million per unit, with deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2028.

This latest agreement follows Hapag-Lloyd’s previous orders for a series of 23,600 TEU ultra-large containerships placed in 2020 and 2021.

In 2023, the world’s fifth-largest container line secured contracts for 12 dual-fuel newbuilds of similar capacity from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding. Funding for these vessels was recently obtained under Hapag-Lloyd’s green financing framework. The agreement also included options for an additional six vessels with deliveries projected for 2028 and 2029.
