An Egyptian-flagged bulk carrier, the Wadi Albostan, has been detained at Paradip Port in India following orders from the Orissa High Court.

The vessel’s detention is the result of a financial dispute between the vessel's owner and Elboil GmbH, a German supplier of marine gas oil. The dispute centers on the delivery of low-sulfur marine gas oil, with Elboil GmbH claiming approximately $477,320 from the vessel owner for supplying around 98 metric tonnes of the fuel.

Elboil GmbH filed a case under Section 4 of the Admiralty Act 2017, which deals with the jurisdiction and settlement of maritime claims, in the Orissa High Court. In response, the Admiralty judge ordered the arrest of Wadi Albostan on August 14.

A civil judge was appointed to enforce the court's order, and the directive was communicated to the Paradip Port Authority, its secretary, and the Traffic Manager to assist in the vessel’s detention. The bulk carrier will remain detained until further notice from the authorities.

The 57,320 dwt bulker, which departed from Chittagong Anchorage on August 3, was en route to China, carrying 55,000 metric tons of iron ore from Paradip Port when it was detained. The vessel, built in 2011, will remain in custody until the legal dispute is resolved.
