French shipping giant CMA CGM has partnered with tech company Mistral AI in a €100 million (approximately $110 million) initiative over the next five years to implement tailored AI solutions across its shipping, logistics, and media divisions.

As part of the collaboration, Mistral AI will assign a dedicated team of experts to CMA CGM’s headquarters in Marseille, as well as to Grand Central, home of CMA Media.

For the group's transport and logistics operations, the partnership will focus on enhancing and simplifying the customer journey. Planned innovations include automated claims handling, smart e-commerce tools, and sophisticated document processing systems.

Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and CEO of CMA CGM, stated: “This partnership with Mistral AI marks a decisive step in the transformation of CMA CGM through artificial intelligence. Together, we will develop tailored solutions to reinvent our businesses, from maritime transport to logistics and media, with tangible benefits for our customers and our employees. With Mistral AI, we are choosing a French technology leader that combines excellence, digital sovereignty, and a strong sense of responsibility, to build an artificial intelligence that serves both our performance and our values.”

Both companies have emphasized their intention to fast-track the use of generative AI (GenAI) throughout CMA CGM’s operations.

In a joint release, CMA CGM noted: “Building on the rise of the first large language models (LLMs), the emergence of more autonomous agents paves the way for new forms of automation and more natural, context-aware interactions. This breakthrough technology is set to fundamentally reshape how teams operate—automating repetitive tasks, boosting productivity, and freeing up time for higher-value, strategic work.”

This initiative is part of CMA CGM’s broader commitment to AI, with a total investment of €500 million. The group has formed strategic alliances with firms like Google and Perplexity and invested in companies such as PoolSide and Dataiku. The 2023 launch of Kyutai, a nonprofit AI research center co-founded by Saadé, further reinforces the company’s dedication to advancing artificial intelligence.
