Cargo Ship Grounded Due to Hull Leak Off Indonesia
A general cargo ship, the George Sejahtera, ran aground in the waters off Linau, west of Lampung, Indonesia, on September 26. A leak in the ship's starboard hull prompted the vessel's captain to intentionally ground it to prevent further damage.
The 5,532 gross ton vessel, measuring 98 meters in length with a beam of 18.8 meters, is registered under the Indonesian flag. The ship was en route from Tapak Tuan, Aceh, to Surabaya, carrying 18 crew members and a cargo of 7,300 tons of iron ore.
According to the chief officer and first engineer, the leak was discovered around 10:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time). After an hour of assessing the situation, the captain made the decision to ground the ship as the condition became unsustainable. It was later reported that two leaks were found in the hull.
Authorities at UPP Linau are coordinating with the ship's crew to safeguard both the environment and the vessel. Efforts are underway to ensure the situation is managed safely.
