Cargo Ship Sun Ray Loses Cargo Off Texel Coast
The cargo vessel Sun Ray lost part of its cargo while navigating a deepwater route approximately 82 kilometers off the coast of Texel, Netherlands. Authorities are actively recovering the lost items, and the affected area has been marked to ensure passing ships steer clear.
The incident took place last week as the ship was traveling from Dubai, UAE, to St. Petersburg, Russia, along a designated deepwater route.
A Coast Guard patrol aircraft initially identified damage to the vessel and confirmed the cargo loss with the ship's captain. The Coast Guard, in coordination with Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management's executive agency, initiated recovery efforts.
The search operation, carried out by the Rijkswaterstaat vessel Zirfaea and the naval vessel Zr. Ms. Schiedam, utilized advanced seabed-scanning equipment. The search successfully recovered 14 cargo items, including gears and a cog radar.
To ensure maritime safety, a virtual buoy now marks the search area, guiding vessels to avoid it. The Dutch Maritime Police Team has launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
