Captain of Silver Breeze Faces Charges After Grounding
The captain of the Ro-Ro/passenger vessel Silver Breeze is facing prosecution following the ship’s grounding in the West Harbor of Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan. The incident took place on July 2, 2024, when the Japan-flagged vessel struck a breakwater while attempting to enter the harbor.
At the time of the incident, 140 passengers and crew were aboard the ship. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or pollution, though the 8,901-ton vessel sustained bow damage.
After conducting an investigation, the Japan Coast Guard determined that the accident resulted from human error. Officials reported that the captain failed to properly verify the ship’s position and course and allegedly neglected to utilize radar or electronic navigation charts.
During questioning, the captain admitted that a steering mistake on his part led to the grounding. As a result, the Japan Coast Guard has charged him with professional negligence, citing the potential danger posed to maritime traffic.
Built in 2021, the Silver Breeze measures 144.13 meters in length and 23 meters in width. The case underscores the importance of strict navigational protocols and safety measures in maritime operations.
