The Canadian Coast Guard is evaluating the best approach to refloat a containership that ran aground off the coast of Newfoundland on Saturday morning.

The MSC Baltic III experienced a power failure near the Bay of Islands entrance, prompting the crew to send a mayday call. The 22-year-old vessel ultimately grounded in Wild Cove, west of Lark Harbour. Fortunately, all crew members were successfully airlifted from the ship without injury.

With the crew safely evacuated, efforts are now focused on salvage operations and addressing marine environmental risks.

Adverse weather conditions remain a challenge, but the Canadian Coast Guard has deployed infrastructure and resources to manage the situation and assist in the ship’s recovery.
