Busan New Port in South Korea has inaugurated its seventh container terminal, enhancing its cargo handling capacity.

The grand opening of the terminal took place on April 5, with South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol in attendance. He praised the facility as a pivotal development in transforming Busan Port into a premier global logistics hub and a world-class smart port.

This terminal marks the country's first to fully integrate automation, featuring ship-to-shore cranes operated remotely and manufactured domestically. These advanced technological features are expected to increase the port's efficiency by up to 20% over traditional terminals and significantly reduce the likelihood of safety incidents.

The construction of the terminal was completed in stages, with ongoing expansion plans set to continue through 2040-2050. The Busan Port Authority has estimated the total cost of the port expansion to be approximately US$32 billion.

In the year 2023, the Port of Busan processed 22.75 million TEUs, recording a growth of 3.1% from the previous year.
