The Port of Funchal has reported a significant increase in the number of cruise ships making overnight visits this year.

According to the Madeira Port Administration (APRAM, SA), the number of overnight calls is expected to reach 73 by the end of 2024. This rise is in line with APRAM's forecasts, as outlined in a recent press release.

In 2022, there were 14 overnight visits in the final two months of the year. By the first week of December 2024, the port had already matched that figure. With additional overnight stops scheduled through the end of the year, the total is set to hit 34 calls.

“For us at the Port of Funchal, this is a strategic priority not only in terms of revenue, as overnights generate more fees, but also in promoting the destination itself,” said Paula Cabaço, chair of APRAM’s board of directors.

APRAM has plans to ramp up its marketing efforts in 2025, aiming to attract more cruise lines by showcasing Madeira’s diverse attractions.

“The short distance between the port and the city is undoubtedly a key factor in encouraging cruise lines to extend their stay in Funchal, allowing passengers to enjoy the city by night,” added Cabaço.

The Port of Funchal recently received global recognition, winning the “Best Cruise Terminal in the World for Sustainability” award from the World Cruise Awards. This accolade follows Madeira being named “Europe’s Best Cruise Destination” in both 2022 and 2023.

Madeira’s cruise tourism sector has seen steady growth, with 2023 marking a record year. The island welcomed 279 cruise calls and, for the first time, surpassed 624,000 passengers — a 51% increase from the previous year.
