Following the example set by CMA CGM, the affluent Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), established by Gianluigi Aponte, has ventured into the media industry.

MSC is in the process of acquiring the Genoese newspaper group Il Secolo XIX. This acquisition also encompasses notable shipping publications such as The MediTelegraph, L’Avvisatore Marittimo, Il Giornale del Ponente Ligure, and TTM – Tecnologie Trasporti Mare.

This move reflects a broader trend among Italian shipowners who diversify their investments by holding stakes in local media outlets. For instance, the Grimaldi family has invested in the monthly publication Economy Magazine.

However, when it comes to media acquisitions by maritime magnates in recent times, Rodolphe Saadé of Marseille stands out.

Saadé has been making significant moves by acquiring several newspapers, numerous digital platforms, and has even recently made offers to acquire France’s leading rolling news channel and a radio station, marking him as a prominent figure in media investment within the shipping industry.
