Greek shipowner Monte Nero Maritime is reportedly behind a recent order for up to four MR2 product tankers at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industries (Guangdong), a Chinese yard traditionally known for repairs and retrofits.

Industry brokers have confirmed two firm orders for 50,000 dwt tankers priced at $44 million each, with delivery anticipated in 2027. The order also includes options for an additional two vessels, which could be delivered in 2028.

Monte Nero has been actively expanding its fleet. In July, the company secured contracts for four MR2 tankers at Huanghai Shipbuilding, also in China, slated for delivery in 2027. Alongside these projects, the firm has three ultramax bulk carriers on order at Nantong Xiangyu Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.

COSCO Guangdong, though primarily recognized for its expertise in ship repairs, has a history of constructing container ships, bulk carriers, and livestock vessels. Earlier in 2023, the yard clinched an order from Singapore’s Consort Bunkers for four 7,999 dwt methanol bunker vessels, with delivery expected in 2026.
