Minor Collision Between Two Bulk Carriers at Chittagong Port
Bangladeshi national news outlets have reported a minor collision between two bulk carriers at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port.
The incident occurred on September 7 at approximately 2 PM local time, when the anchor of the bulk carrier Navios Celestial slipped, causing it to collide with another vessel, Friendly Islands.
Navios Celestial, a Panama-registered bulk carrier, was transporting 44,000 tons of DAP fertilizers, while Friendly Islands, flying the Liberian flag, was carrying 27,000 tons of lentils at the time of the accident.
According to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), both vessels sustained only minor damage with no reports of water ingress. There were no injuries among the crew on either ship, and no pollution was detected. An investigation has been initiated to identify the cause of the collision.
Both vessels have since moved to new anchorage positions and are now safely anchored, according to the CPA. The CPA Secretary also stated that local agents and the Protection & Indemnity (P&I) clubs representing both ships are already managing compensation and legal liabilities related to the incident.
