India has successfully secured the rights to operate a terminal at Mongla Port in Bangladesh, marking its third overseas port operation after Chabahar Port in Iran and Sittwe Port in Myanmar.

Indian Port Global Limited (IPGL) will manage the Mongla Port terminal. A senior official from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways confirmed IPGL's role in the operation, although financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.

In October 2018, Bangladesh signed an agreement granting India full access to Chittagong Port and Mongla Port for the transit and shipment of cargo to India's northeastern states. According to an Economic Times report, the first trial of this transshipment occurred in July 2020.

Mongla Port is Bangladesh's second-largest and busiest seaport, located near the Bay of Bengal. The port features eleven jetties and eight warehouses, serving as a significant hub for global, particularly Asian, shipping routes.

Bangladesh, a major garment exporter, experiences heavy traffic at its ports. To address this congestion, Bangladesh has launched a substantial expansion project for Chittagong Port.
