Royal Caribbean Group’s Icon of the Seas will soon make history at PortMiami by connecting to the port's newly installed shore power system.

Icon will start utilizing shore power at Port of Miami next week,” confirmed Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group.

PortMiami's extensive shore power program has enabled the port to equip its terminals for ships to plug in directly, reducing emissions while docked.

With the world’s largest cruise ship set to connect as early as November, this is part of several environmental initiatives by Royal Caribbean Group.

Liberty also highlighted the upcoming launch of the Celebrity Xcel, debuting at the end of next year, which will be the company’s first ship capable of running on methanol. He referred to this ship as a key milestone in Royal Caribbean’s journey toward sustainable energy.

Another recent highlight he mentioned was the trans-Atlantic journey of Utopia of the Seas, completed this summer using bio-LNG fuel.
