On 14th February, Hong Kong successfully conducted its first-ever ship-to-ship (STS) LNG transfer, marking a key step in the city’s shift towards greener shipping practices.

The operation was carried out by Kunlun Energy Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation, with the dual-fuel container ship Zim Aquamarine receiving 2,200 tonnes of ultra-low-temperature LNG from the bunkering vessel Xin Ao Pu Tuo Hao.

This milestone event was witnessed by senior officials and government representatives, highlighting the significance of LNG adoption in Hong Kong’s maritime sector.

LNG is widely regarded as a cleaner alternative to conventional marine fuels, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 25%, nitrogen dioxide emissions by 85%, and virtually eliminating sulfur dioxide emissions. The successful bunkering operation reinforces Hong Kong’s commitment to sustainable shipping solutions.
