Extinction Rebellion Blocks Port of Amsterdam
A group from Extinction Rebellion once again blocked the entrance to the Port of Amsterdam, Netherlands, in a protest that prevented the cruise ship Serenade of the Seas and the oil tanker Sten Neptun from docking. This action caused delays for both vessels entering the port.
On August 18, the Serenade of the Seas was stopped from entering the IJmuiden lock near Amsterdam. A small group of protesters chained themselves to the Noordersluis and Zeeslius locks in IJmuiden, obstructing access.
This demonstration is the latest in a series of protests by activists targeting the cruise industry in the region, accusing it of contributing to climate change.
The protesters argue that the cruise industry is driving a climate crisis and should be halted. Police were called in the afternoon to remove the demonstrators from the port, but they were released without arrest.
Extinction Rebellion has also announced plans for a mass protest on August 31.
Previously, on August 16, the cruise ship Ambition had to redirect its course to IJmuiden after being alerted to a similar protest at Amsterdam Port.
