Cargo Ship Guang Rong Goes Adrift & Collides with Pier
On January 28, the cargo vessel Guang Rong went adrift in the waters between Marina di Carrara and the Marina di Massa pier in Italy.
According to local reports, the ship was partially loaded with marble debris when it lost control, likely due to strong winds, and crashed into the Marina di Massa pier. The situation was further complicated by an onboard crane used for moving marble debris, which may have destabilized the vessel. The collision caused part of the pier to collapse, prompting authorities to close off the affected area.
Fortunately, all thirteen crew members aboard the Guang Rong were unharmed and managed to evacuate safely. The incident triggered an immediate response from the Port Authority Coast Guard of Marina di Carrara, with firefighters, carabinieri, police, and emergency responders arriving at the scene.
By the morning of January 29, authorities began assessing the damage and working to secure the wreck. The Genoa Coast Guard’s Underwater Unit conducted an inspection of the ship’s hull to determine its condition and outline the necessary steps for removal.
A warning has been issued advising people to avoid the restricted area and respect safety barriers. Due to the complexity of the operation, the removal process is expected to take several days. Local officials and experts are overseeing the intervention to ensure it is carried out safely while minimizing environmental and navigational risks.
Reports indicate that the ship had been detained in 2023 by the Genoa Coast Guard due to 12 identified deficiencies, seven of which were classified as serious.
