Bulk Carrier Engine Room Explosion Kills Seven, Injures More
On May 30, SNRT media reported an explosion and subsequent fire in the engine room of the 91,384 dwt vessel Toro Rosso, resulting in the deaths of seven crew members and injuries to others.
At the time of the incident the vessel was anchored eight nautical miles off Jorf Lasfar Port, Morocco, awaiting a fertilizer load.
Rescue efforts were swift, with tugs and rescue boats arriving quickly to aid the vessel and transport the injured crew members to shore.
A Ministry of Health and Social Protection official told SNRT media that several bodies were recovered at the scene. Three injured crew members were taken to Casablanca for medical treatment, while two others were transferred to a private clinic in El Jadida.
Toro Rosso, a 27-year-old bulk carrier, is registered in Panama and chartered by an Ethiopian company. The vessel had departed from Rizhao on March 15.
