Biden Announces $3 Billion for Port Upgrades Nationwide
President Joe Biden has announced a $3 billion investment dedicated to cleaning up and upgrading port facilities in 27 U.S. states and territories. This initiative, which spans 55 sites across the country, aims to modernize infrastructure, enhance sustainability, and support the adoption of greener technology in ports.
Among the projects receiving funding, the Port of Baltimore will be allocated $147 million from the Inflation Reduction Act. This funding will go toward zero-emission port equipment, as well as new charging stations and power enhancements to support clean energy initiatives.
The $3 billion package includes funding for battery-electric and hydrogen-powered equipment, such as 1,000 drayage trucks, 10 locomotives, and 20 vessels, along with infrastructure for charging and refueling. Shore power systems and solar energy facilities will also be developed to reduce emissions and increase energy efficiency.
According to the White House, the program is expected to generate approximately 40,000 jobs across the United States, including more than 6,500 in manufacturing. Over the first decade, it aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 3 million tons—equivalent to the annual energy consumption of nearly 400,000 homes.
