AIDAprima Runs on 100% Renewable Bio Marine Fuel in Rotterdam
On September 5, 2024, AIDA Cruises marked a milestone by refueling the AIDAprima with 100 percent renewable Bio Marine Fuel for the first time at the port of Rotterdam.
As outlined in a press release, the pilot initiative is designed to assess the fuel's performance during regular operations, with the potential for future adoption. The renewable biofuel, made from advanced sources like organic waste and residual materials, was provided by VARO Energy. This biofuel is anticipated to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85 percent compared to traditional fossil fuels.
“We are focused on identifying advanced fuels and technologies we can use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In our search for the fuel mix of the future, we have been gathering valuable experience through trials using various biofuels since 2022, and we continue to closely cooperate with experts from industry and science to develop new approaches to continuously reduce emissions,” said AIDA Cruises President Felix Eichhorn.
He also emphasized the need for an increasing supply of biofuels and other low-carbon alternatives, which should be available worldwide and at competitive prices to ensure a sustainable future.
Following the refueling in Rotterdam, the AIDAprima will utilize the biofuel during its upcoming voyages, which include trips from Hamburg through Norway’s fjords. The results of these tests will inform decisions about the potential use of the biofuel across AIDA’s fleet.
Sacha Konan, Country President and Vice President of Commercial, Benelux and France at VARO Energy, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “Since 2019, VARO has successfully developed, blended, and supplied a wide variety of biofuels for marine use, including B30/B100, HVO (up to 100 percent), and low-FAME biofuel blends. We are excited to supply AIDAprima, working with AIDA and Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise company.”
He added that this refueling operation in Rotterdam highlights VARO’s commitment to aiding marine clients in their efforts to decarbonize as the sector adjusts to new regulations. VARO aims to continue expanding its biofuel offerings in the ARA region and beyond.
