A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, on March 27, when the tourist submarine Sindbad sank, resulting in six fatalities and nine injuries. The vessel, operated by Sindbad Submarines, has been offering underwater tours in the area for many years.

The accident reportedly happened around 10:00 AM local time, roughly one kilometer from the shoreline. At the time of the incident, the submarine was carrying more than 40 passengers. According to a statement from the Russian Embassy in Egypt, all individuals on board were Russian nationals.

Emergency response teams arrived quickly at the scene and were able to rescue 29 passengers from the submerged vessel.

Among the injured, four individuals were reported to be in critical condition and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

Sindbad Submarines has long been a popular choice for tourists visiting Hurghada, offering guided undersea tours to view coral reefs and marine life at depths of up to 25 meters. Each of the company’s submarines is designed to carry 44 passengers and two pilots, with large viewing windows at every seat for optimal underwater visibility.

Weather data from the area suggests sea conditions were calm at the time of the sinking, ruling out rough weather as a possible cause.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine what led to the accident, as questions remain about how the well-established tourist operation encountered such a devastating failure.
