A ship repair yard in northeast England, A&P Tees, is shutting down. Spanning five acres, the site includes two drydocks and a 240-meter jetty. A&P also operates two additional yards within England.
The site, historically known as Smiths Dock, has been a hub for shipbuilding since the early 20th century. A&P acquired it in 2003 after the previous operator, Cammell Laird, went out of business.
Employees from the Tees facility are being given opportunities to transfer to another A&P yard nearby.
In an effort to boost shipbuilding and support coastal communities, the UK government announced a £4 billion ($5.16 billion) initiative under its National Shipbuilding Strategy Refresh two years ago.
