On March 22, the Fugro Mercator, a research vessel registered under the Bahamas flag, ran aground on the reef of the Enfola promontory near Portoferraio, Italy. The vessel, carrying 11 people—including crew members and scientific technicians of various nationalities—was conducting seabed monitoring at the time of the incident.

According to reports, the ship moved closer to the coast to seek shelter from deteriorating weather conditions when it struck a shallow area near a rocky cliff.

The impact caused structural damage, allowing water to enter the hull. Despite the crew’s initial efforts to control the flooding, water reached engine components, eventually leading to a full electrical blackout onboard.

A rescue operation was coordinated by the Livorno Maritime Directorate. Patrol vessel CP 805, operated by the Portoferraio Port Authority, was deployed to evacuate all personnel. The challenging conditions—caused by rough seas, the ship’s position near rocks, and the blackout—made the rescue particularly complex. Fortunately, everyone on board was safely evacuated and reported to be in good condition.

Ongoing aerial and maritime surveillance by the Italian Coast Guard has not detected any oil leakage or pollution in the area.

The cause of the grounding is still under investigation. In the meantime, the Portoferraio Port Authority has directed the ship’s operator to organize the vessel’s removal to safeguard the marine environment. A specialized team has already begun underwater inspections to prepare a recovery plan.
