This month marked a significant milestone for APM Terminals Gijón with the docking of the MSC Katyayni, the largest container vessel to ever call at the Port of El Musel, located on the northern coastline of Spain.

The MSC Katyayni, with its dimensions of 275 meters in length and 40 meters in width, stayed at the terminal for 33 hours. During this time, operations included the loading and unloading of 740 containers.

Recent upgrades at the terminal have been strategic in preparing for the reception of larger ships, promising to enhance the competitive edge for both importers and exporters in the northern region of Spain.

Key to these enhancements was the addition of a Post-Panamax QC903 ship-to-shore crane last year, which, along with APM Terminals' global adoption of lean operational methods, has significantly bolstered the terminal's capacity to handle an increased volume of larger vessels.

The newly introduced crane features a nominal lifting capacity of 40 tons and can reach a height of 33 meters under the spreader, which is eight meters higher than the crane it replaced. It also extends its outreach to 16 rows, three more than before, accommodating vessels longer than 250 meters with a maximum draft of 10.2 meters.
