MSC Rhiannon Refloated After Grounding Off Istanbul Coast

The container ship MSC Rhiannon ran aground near Yeşilköy, off the Istanbul coast, while attempting to change anchorage. Thanks to a swift response from Turkish authorities, the vessel was successfully refloated on March 15.

Incident Details

The grounding took place in the morning hours as the vessel was sailing from Romania to Tekirdağ. In response, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure deployed a coordinated rescue effort, which included:

  • The tugboat Kurtarma-9
  • The fast rescue boat KEGM-3
  • A diver team
  • A pilot and a rescue expert

These units worked together to free the stranded vessel and ensure its safe return to navigable waters.

The MSC Rhiannon is a 2012-built container ship registered under the Liberian flag. The vessel measures 188.1 meters in length and 30 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 23,890.

Following the successful refloating, authorities have not reported any significant damage, and maritime traffic in the area has resumed as normal.
