Bulk Carrier Runs Aground Whilst Navigating Istanbul Strait
On May 7, the Liberian-registered bulk carrier Alexis ran aground near Haydarpaşa
while navigating the Istanbul Strait in Turkey.
In response, Turkish authorities swiftly deployed three Coastal Safety tugs and a rescue boat to aid the stranded vessel. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported during the incident.
Following maritime protocol and regulations, Turkish officials are expected to require salvage security or payment from the vessel's property interests before allowing the Alexis to leave Turkish waters.
This compensation, aimed at covering damages to both the ship and its cargo, may be sought from the vessel owner or could be addressed separately to both ship and cargo interests.
Currently, the Alexis is moored at the Istanbul Anchorage, with plans to proceed to Port Said by May 11.
