Bulk Carrier Attacked in Singapore Strait Amid Rising Incidents
UK-based maritime security consultancy Ambrey has reported that a bulk carrier was boarded by four individuals armed with knives while transiting eastbound through the Philip Channel in the Singapore Strait. The incident occurred approximately 12 nautical miles northwest of Pulau Terung, Indonesia.
The attack, which took place yesterday, is the latest in a series of similar incidents in the area over recent months. Like many previous cases, the targeted vessel had a low freeboard, estimated at just 6.25 meters, making it more vulnerable to unauthorized boarding.
Ambrey advises that vessels with freeboards under 10 meters are at increased risk when navigating the Singapore Strait. The consultancy recommends crews secure access to the accommodation block and ship’s stores to minimize potential threats.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by ships transiting the busy waterways of the Singapore Strait. Ship operators are urged to remain vigilant and implement enhanced security measures to protect their crews and assets.
