A 73-year-old tourist was taken into custody at Kobe Port Terminal in Japan after disclosing that he had a handgun in his luggage while preparing to board a cruise. Authorities suspect the man passed through two airports with the weapon undetected.

Security Oversight Raises Concerns

The traveler, who departed from Honolulu, Hawaii, landed at Kansai International Airport on March 22. Japanese authorities are now investigating how he was able to pass through security checkpoints at both airports without the firearm being flagged. Osaka Customs declined to comment on the specifics, citing confidentiality regarding inspection procedures.

Gun Found at Cruise Terminal

After his arrival in Japan, the tourist spent the night at a hotel in Osaka. The next morning, while repacking his belongings, he said he realized he had accidentally brought a revolver, which he claimed he had packed for self-defense.

Instead of alerting authorities immediately, he boarded a bus and traveled roughly 70 kilometers to Kobe Port Terminal. Once there, he discarded three bullets in a restroom trash bin before attempting to board the cruise ship. Shortly afterward, he notified security personnel about the firearm.

Police were called to the terminal and discovered the revolver inside a pouch in his suitcase. He was arrested for violating Japan’s strict Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law.

Explanation and Legal Ramifications

According to investigators, the man told police that he had not realized the gun was in his luggage until after arriving in Japan. Fearing the consequences of possessing both a firearm and ammunition, he said he disposed of the bullets before reporting the weapon.

Japan enforces some of the most rigid firearm regulations in the world, and unauthorized possession carries serious legal consequences. The case remains under investigation as authorities assess how the weapon evaded airport screening and evaluate the appropriate legal action against the tourist.
