Brief JD of a Staff Chief Engineer is appended below: The Staff Chief Engineer is in-charge of the engine department. He is responsible to the Master for administration, supervision and economical operation of the engine department. Reporting: He shall keep himself fully informed at all times of the activities of his department and comply with all applicable local/ classification/ MARPOL regulations and IMO recommendations. He shall personally supervise any work he considers to be a hazardous nature and shall see that all safety/ environmental regulations are adhered to. He is required to keep the Master fully informed on all matters connected with his department. He shall also take care that any instructions issued by the Company relating to the Engine Department are promulgated to all concerned in whatever manner he deems fit and that they are complied with. He shall promptly inform the Master and the Superintendent of any machinery damage involving seaworthiness of the vessel, engine revolutions, limitation or maneuvering difficulties and possible delay or need for outside assistance in effecting repair. Should it be necessary to stop or slow the engines for any reason, as much warning as possible is to be given to the Bridge to enable the Navigating Officer on duty to take the necessary precautions for the navigational safety of the vessel. He is responsible for the performance and maintenance in a state of efficient working order and of readiness for immediate use of main and auxiliary machineries, boiler, all machineries fitted in the engine room, cargo handling equipment, mooring equipment, air-conditioning system, galley and laundry machinery. To ensure that local/international oil pollution regulations and Company regulations as stated in ‘MARPOL’ and Company’s SMS are strictly complied at all times. He shall be responsible for the care and upkeep of pollution control equipment including oily water separator, oil content monitors, incinerator etc. To make daily inspections of the machinery spaces, stores, workshops etc. correcting unsafe practices and noting any repairs required.
