The cause behind the explosion on the oil tanker Seajewel on February 14 while docked in Savona, Italy remains unknown, despite authorities launching an investigation. Fortunately, no injuries or pollution have been reported.

Crew Reports & Initial Findings

According to the crew, two loud explosions were heard before the hull sustained a concave deformation.

The Savona port authority confirmed that the ship’s crew had already halted oil unloading operations before the incident occurred.

Investigation & Theories

  • The hull suffered inward damage below the waterline.
  • A fish kill in the area has led to speculation that an external explosive device may have been involved.
  • The Savona Coast Guard is conducting an investigation, though no official statements have been released.

To assist with the probe, a diving team from the Italian Navy has been deployed, and the local anti-mafia department has been informed.

Links to Russian Oil Shipments

The Seajewel reportedly carried Russian cargo three times in 2024. At the time of the explosion, Ukrainian authorities alleged that the tanker was transporting Russian oil to Europe despite sanctions.
