Scottish tech firm Zelim has introduced the first AI-powered man overboard (MOB) detection system on a cruise ship, marking a significant step forward in maritime safety. The new system, named ZOE, has been installed aboard Ambition, a 48,123-gross-ton vessel operated by Ambassador Cruise Line.

ZOE uses a combination of infrared and daylight cameras, advanced sensors, and artificial intelligence to deliver continuous 360-degree surveillance. Unlike conventional MOB systems that simply detect when someone falls overboard, ZOE can identify and actively track a person in the water in real time.

Nick Hughes, Chief Operating Officer at Ambassador Cruise Line, emphasized the importance of passenger and crew safety, stating: “The installation of ZOE ensures that if an overboard incident occurs, the system immediately alerts the bridge and continuously tracks the person until rescue operations are completed.”

Doug Lothian, Zelim’s Chief Technology Officer, explained that ZOE brings a significant edge over older systems by offering real-time tracking of an overboard person. Traditional MOB technologies often lose sight of individuals due to the vessel’s movement, complicating rescue efforts. ZOE counters this problem by incorporating accurate geo-location data, allowing ship crews to coordinate a timely and precise response.

The system is currently undergoing sea trials aboard Ambition to ensure it meets ISO 21195 standards for MOB detection. It has already shown a 98% success rate during Lloyd’s Register certification testing phases I and II.

Stewart Gregory, Chief Operating Officer at Zelim, applauded Ambassador Cruise Line for being an early adopter of AI-based MOB technology. He noted that the deployment of ZOE on Ambition demonstrates that cruise lines now have access to dependable tools for reducing the risk of losing someone at sea—particularly under challenging weather conditions or during nighttime.

ZOE will be showcased at Seatrade Global Cruise in Miami, taking place April 7–10, 2025, where it’s expected to generate significant attention from cruise operators seeking to upgrade their safety protocols.

With its high detection accuracy, constant surveillance, and real-time location tracking, ZOE represents a game-changing innovation in the cruise industry’s ongoing efforts to improve safety standards for both guests and crew.
